What causes teeth to change color?

Brushing, flossing, and regular visits to the dentist help keep your teeth and gums healthy, but may not completely prevent your teeth from losing their natural brightness.

There are many things that cause teeth to change color, including:

Eating and drinking

What you eat affects the brightness of your teeth. Certain foods and drinks contain pigments that stain your teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, blueberries, and tomato sauce. The pigments in these foods attach to the white enamel on your teeth, dulling the color.

Using tobacco

Tar and nicotine in tobacco products create hard-to-treat stains on your teeth. Tar is naturally dark and causes teeth to turn brown, while nicotine turns teeth yellow when it mixes with oxygen.

Aging

Aging affects many parts of your body, including your teeth. Years of eating and toothbrushing gradually wear away the white enamel that covers your teeth. Under the enamel is your tooth’s dentin, which is yellow. With less enamel, the yellow dentin shows through. 

Certain medications

Tooth discoloration is a side effect of some medications, including antihistamines, certain blood pressure medications, and antipsychotics. 

Injury

Injuries to your teeth or mouth may also cause a change in color.
